FAQs
Everything you ever wanted to know about the Plum experience can be found right here.
Usage
Plum is easy to setup. Once you take it out of the box, just plug it in, and follow the guide on the touchscreen. You'll be enjoying wine in minutes!
Yes, you can customize the preferred temperature for each varietal through Plum's touchscreen. You can also change the temperature for an individual bottle when you add it to your Plum.
It is strongly recommended that you leave each bottle in your Plum until it is empty. This is because Plum uses a special needle that works with any type of closure and enables faster pouring of each glass. This needle will leave a small hole in the cork or screw cap, so if you remove a bottle that still has wine you should consume it within 24 hours depending on the varietal. Should you remove a bottle that still contains wine, it is possible that wine will leak upon removal as the contents are under pressure.
If you wish to remove a bottle that still has wine in it, touch the Settings button, then touch the GENERAL button, then touch the REMOVE BOTTLES button and select the wine you wish to remove. Please note that if the bottle is pressurized, a small amount of wine may escape during removal. Please wipe down the bottle tray after removal.
The system will automatically prompt you to replace an empty bottle.
Our goal was not to build a device for people that are taking a one ounce pour of an '82 Mouton and trying to lay it back down. Our goal was to build a device you would use every day. Something beautiful enough to put on your kitchen counter or display in your living room, and be able to have the perfect glass: preserved and at the perfect temperature at a touch.
Chilling time depends on the temperature the bottle is starting at, and what temperature it needs to go to. Generally speaking, most bottles reach their ideal serving temperature within 90 minutes.
Plum is only intended for use at home and should not be used in a commercial environment.
Plum's argon canister was designed to provide preservation for more than 150 bottles, so the average user only needs to replace the argon every 18 months.
Argon replacements are available to order on our website
Plum uses a special argon canister so you don't need to refill often, and we ship your Plum with a full canister. Each canister lasts for 150 bottles of wine and is fully recyclable.
With Plum, you can focus on enjoying your collection, not swapping argon canisters.
You won't need to refill the argon canister until you consume about 150 bottles through your Plum. Additional argon canisters are available to order online.
Argon canisters are re-usable, and Plum makes it easy for you to swap your empty canisters.
Empty argon canisters should be returned to Plum. Please email support@plum.wine to receive shipping information. We ask that you do not throw away your used argon canisters.
Plum comes with a full argon canister, and refills are available online at www.plum.wine.
Plum has a built-in cleaning cycle. Your Plum knows when it needs cleaning, and will notify you to add the included cleaning bottle with the cleaning packet solution. It only takes a few minutes for your Plum to clean itself so it's ready to enjoy.

General
Plum is the first appliance to fully automate the preserving and serving of wine - just as the winemaker intended. Simply drop in any 750ml bottle of wine with any closure, and Plum takes care of the rest - automatically identifying the wine, setting the perfect serving temperature, cooling each bottle individually, and extracting the wine one glass at a time. Plum uses a motorized needle that lasts 300 bottles per chamber to pierce the foil and closure so the wine stays fresh, and you can enjoy your wine collection on your terms.
A beautiful touchscreen displays the labels, giving you a taste or a glass at a touch.
Plum's argon canisters preserve over 150 bottles of wine.
Plum's fully automated system photographs the wine label and sends it to a cloud database powered by Vivino that detects the winery, wine, vintage, region, and varietal.
Plum's solid state cooling begins chilling your wine to its ideal serving temperature. Our patented double-cored needle then pierces the foil and closure, and pressurizes the bottle with argon gas automatically. Plum's custom-designed argon gas system holds 150 wine bottles worth of preservation. The system employs the same stainless steel tubing used in winemaking, delivering wine directly from the bottle and into your glass, and keeping the wine preserved for up to 90 days.
Plum preserves your wine for up to 90 days.
When we first started this business, we began asking winemakers and experts how to even measure oxidation in wine once it's been opened. Interestingly, we got different (and incomplete) answers from most of the folks we spoke with. The majority of preservation science in the wine industry is focused on what happens between harvest and bottling. We were interested in understanding EXACTLY what happens AFTER the wine is bottled. So we went to one of the World's leading experts in preservation, ETS Laboratories in Napa Valley, and started our own research in parallel.
Ultimately, we decided there are four main indicators you need to test for to be comprehensive about the impact of preservation: Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Acetaldehyde (start of acetic acid process), phenolics (the color change - the same browning you see when you slice an apple and leave it on the counter), and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2).
In parallel, we use wine experts to do taste testing to keep all the chemical testing honest.
Ultimately, we think that by piercing the closure and never removing the needle, using ultra high purity argon, stainless steel tubing, and electronic solenoids to prevent oxygen from entering the system you get the best possible preservation. And luckily, the testing agrees.
Plum works with any standard 750ml bottle of wine with any standard closure - including natural cork, engineered cork, artificial cork, and even metal screw caps. Plum does not work with glass closures.
If your bottle has a wax seal, the wax must be removed prior to placing the bottle in Plum to avoid clogging the needle.
Plum supports bottles up to 3.5" in diameter, and between 11-13" in length. That means it works with more than 98% of commercially available wine.
Plum is 15" wide, 17" high, 20.5" deep and weighs 65 pounds. Plum is compact enough to fit on standard kitchen countertops and nest underneath your upper cabinets.
Plum's integrated cameras instantly detect every bottle added, photograph the label and send it to a cloud database of more than six million wines. The accuracy is more than 95%, but you can always adjust any of your wine details through the integrated touchscreen.
Plum only works with still wine.
We love that you want to bring your Plum with you everywhere. Argon is a safe, inert gas. However, due to the pressure in the canister, Plum canisters are prohibited from air travel. We mail your Plum to you via ground shipping in accordance with US law.
Yes, Plum will work with unfiltered wines. Plum stores the wine bottles at a 55 degree angle so sediment naturally collects in the shoulder instead of in your glass.
Plum will keep 80-90% of the sediment in the bottle. Our needle is large enough that for any sediment that does make it to the needle will pass through without clogging.
